Aldeas: A Theater Production on Identity & Movement / by Schmoo Theune

I love saying yes to great collaborations and this one is absolutely one I have to talk about. I met dancer and choreographer Masha Gurina a year or so ago through a mutual friend who was arranging drinks for fellow Berlin transplants. The common theme for many of us was that we came to Berlin following a dramatic life shift.

Fast forward to 2019 and Masha invited me to be a part of this project she’s been developing. Aldeas, which means “villages” in Spanish, is a contemporary dance piece addressing the concept of identity and how we meld and shift when we live in cities. The production was underway, but was I interested in creating photos for the backdrop? Of course! I love photographing abstract architectural images on my travels and these will be a part of the scenography… with a bit of motion design to spice them up. Exciting!

Aside from Masha and myself, we have three amazing dancers (Maria Torrents, David Mariano, Sarah Vella), motion designer Yuriy Khomovsky, graphic designer Sasha Vidakovic, and composer Juan Pablo De Lucca.

We’re fundraising to be able to make the performance as astoundingly beautiful as we dream it to be, and so that we can offer part of the experience to those who may not be able to come to Berlin to see it. Here it is, on Indiegogo:

Thanks to all who have supported us so far! Every donation helps, and the production is planned for Spring/Summer 2020. Stay tuned…
